POMONA – All-American
Jonathan Williams headlines a trio of Broncos who will compete in the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, set for May 27-29 at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C.
Williams and senior decathlete
Michael Hernandez will compete for the men's team, while senior
Tokunbo Adeniji will compete in the 400 meters for the Broncos' women's team.
Williams earned a berth in the 200 by virtue of his 21.01 effort set Saturday at Cal State L.A.'s Last Chance Meet. The Temecula native just missed on the CPP record of 21.00 set by DeVon Edwards in 1994. Josh Scott of St. Augustine's holds the fastest time in the country (20.68). Williams' time is seventh fastest in the country.
Williams earned his first All-American honor by placing seventh in the 100 m at last year's event in San Angelo, Texas. He did not make this year's 100-meter field for the first time in his four-year career.
Hernandez will attempt to earn his first All-American honor in the multi-event. He finished just short of that goal a year ago when he placed ninth with 6,582 points. The Moreno Valley native scored a personal-best 6,654 points at the Cal State Northridge event in March and stands 10th-best in the nation. Central Missouri's Darius Walker holds the nation's top score of 7,041.
Adeniji raced a personal-best 55.33 in the 400 at UCLA in March and owns the 12th fastest time this spring. This will mark the Pomona resident's third consecutive year in the event and she looks to earn a berth in the finals for the first time. Nyoka Cole of Lincoln, Mo., owns the fastest time this spring (54.46).
