IRVINE -- Junior Carter Griffin extended his personal best time in the 400 meters and finished third as the Cal Poly Pomona men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Steve Scott Invitational, hosted by UC Irvine this weekend.

Griffin ran the event in 47.44 as the Broncos prepare for this week's CCAA Championships that begin Thursday at UC San Diego.

"Both teams have individuals who can turn it up when the light shines,'' Broncos coach Troy Johnson said. "We're excited about this week because this what we prepare for all season.''

Junior Jose Marquez ran 9:30.;46 in the steeplechase for second place, while senior pole vaulter Andrew Miller placed seventh at 15 feet, 1 1/2 inches.

Junior Ileana Tejada placed sixth in the hammer at 161-4. She also placed sixth in the discus (127-3).

Senior Riz Carrington was fourth in the shot put (38-5 1/2).
