POMONA, Calif. – Off to a 5-0 start through the early portion of the 2011-12 season, the 11th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team received more good news this week.
Cydnie Jones of Martin Luther King Jr. High School in Riverside, Calif., signed a letter of intent to join the Broncos' program in 2012-13, CPP head coach
Danelle Bishop announced Tuesday.
"Cydnie brings natural athleticism and quickness at the guard spot for us," Bishop said. "She anticipates very well on defense and is a fierce competitor. On and off the court, she is a perfect fit with our team in regard to character, integrity and work ethic."
A senior student-athlete, Jones is a two-sport standout in basketball and track and field. As a junior for the Kings last year, she averaged 12.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.2 steals. Serving as captain once again this season, Jones has helped King High School to a 3-1 mark so far and has raised her scoring average to 14 points per contest.
Up to this point, one of the most memorable moments in Jones' high school career came during the 2010-11 season in the final regular season game. Challenging J.W. North, Jones collected 30 points, 11 rebounds, five steals and three assists to help the Wolves capture a 61-59 victory.
Jones is also a captain of the track and field squad and she earned the Most Outstanding Sprinter Award last year. Once enrolled at CPP, she plans on pursuing a degree in Liberal Studies.
