NEW ORLEANS - Cal Poly Pomona's
Jacob Deavers collected All-Region honors in four events as he joined three teammates with the Division II accolade, U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) officials announced Tuesday.
Earlier in May, Deavers totaled 22 individual points on the final day of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships. The performances signified the versatility of Deavers, who earned All-Region distinction for the 400-meter dash, 110-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles and the 4x400 relay.
The three other members of the Broncos' 4x400 relay -
Brian Crane,
James Weiner and
Tanner Terry - also received All-Region recognition in USTFCCCA's announcement Tuesday.
The top five from each region in individual events and each member of a relay ranked in the region's top three have earned the All-Region distinction for the 2012 outdoor season.
On May 24 in Pueblo, Colo., Deavers will be making the second appearance of his career at the Division II Track & Field National Championships. At the 2011 nationals in Turlock, Deavers finished seventh in the 400-meter hurdles event to earn All-American recognition.
He's raced to a career-best 52.18 in the 400-meter hurdles on two different occasions in 2012. The first came during day one of the Cal/Nevada Invitational in Claremont while the second took place on the final day of the CCAA Championships. The 52.18 ranks fifth all-time in the Broncos' record books and puts him at No. 15 nationally going into the D-II Championships. Lincoln's Sabiel Anderson is the favorite with a seed time of 51.03.
Aside from the relay, Crane also shined in the 200- and 400-meter events. The sophomore out of Chino Hills hit his top 200-meter time, 22.09, on April 7 at Cal State L.A. A week earlier, Crane notched the team's second-best 400-meter mark of 2012 with a 48.68 time in Claremont.
Weiner and Terry both turned in impressive debut seasons in their first year at CPP in 2012. Weiner recorded the Broncos' top 100-meter time for 2012 after crossing the line in 10.83 on April 7 at CSULA. Terry also showed his sprinting versatility, owning top three marks for CPP in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter events with respective times of 10.88, 21.55 and 49.26.
