"Night of Excellence" Celebrates Broncos' Success

POMONA, Calif. On Monday in a "Night of Excellence" held at Kellogg West, the Cal Poly Pomona intercollegiate athletics department reflected on the 2011-12 school year and celebrated the success of the Broncos' student-athletes.

Although CPP's "Athlete of the Year" honors are typically awarded to one male and one female, the total had to be increased this year due to so many tremendous individual performances.

University president Dr. J. Michael Ortiz introduced the four honorees, starting with the Female Co-Athletes of the Year Tiffany Dinh and Megan Ford.

Dinh earned All-American recognition during the 2011 cross country season and is aiming to qualify for the 2012 track and field nationals, which will be held later this month in Colorado. Ford has helped the Broncos' women's basketball team to three-straight appearances in the NCAA postseason, including a West Region title in 2011. She also collected All-American recognition after an impressive senior season.

The two Male Co-Athletes of the Year proved to be Geoff Broussard and Jacob Deavers. Broussard ranks No. 1 nationally in wins among Division II pitchers and has guided the Broncos' baseball squad to back-to-back seasons of winning percentages over .600. Deavers, an All-American in 2011, put together another strong showing at the California Collegaite Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships this past weekend while racking up 22 individual points.

Jenzen Torres and Rosslyn Beard received the Dr. Hal Charnofsky Memorial Awards Monday as presented by Faculty Athletic Representative Dr. David Horner. Torres, one of just two four-year seniors on the baseball team, became CPP's homerun leader earlier this year and has also excelled in the classroom as a three-time Dean's List honoree. Beard provided veteran leadership to the women's basketball squad in recent years while being regarded as one of the league's top passers and defenders. She was a nine-time Dean's List honoree.

Clark Selters and Valerie Strawn collected Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year honors as they hold the top grade point averages among Broncos who have exhausted their athletic eligibility. Both Selters and Strawn are three-time CCAA All-Academic selections, 11-time Dean's List honorees and three-time President's List stars. After presenting Selters and Strawn with their awards, Academic Counselor Scott Tsuji announced that women's basketball had earned the Academic Excellence Team Award with a combined GPA of 3.31.

Later in the evening, Kristin McNeese received the Presidential Appreciation Award for her work as the leader of the Bronco Athletic Association (BAA) during the 2011-12 school year. One of the loudest ovations of the night came when Mike Esquivel was announced as the recipient of the Terri Brown Bronco Spirit Award. Esquivel, a Kinesiology staff member and former CPP football player, is a dedicated and passionate supporter of the Broncos' student-athletes.
