KANSAS CITY, Mo. - In a Wednesday announcement from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), Cal Poly Pomona's
Mitchel Anderson received All-American honors as one of the top 16 men's basketball student-athletes at the NCAA Division II level.
Anderson is the sixth player in program history to receive the honor, joining Bill Leedom (1962-63), Paul Scranton (1965-66), Terry Ross (1990-91), Jeff Bonds (2004-05) and Larry Gordon (2008-09) in that elite company.
"Mitchel is one of the best all-around basketball players to wear a Bronco uniform," CPP head coach
Greg Kamansky said. "He's represented our university extremely well on and off the court."
On Friday, Anderson will compete in the NCAA D-II College All-Star Game to be held at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky. Tipoff for the All-Star Game is set for 4 p.m. PDT (7 p.m. EDT).
A Temecula, Calif., native, Anderson finished with 1,433 points and 180 steals through his four-year collegiate career, ranking third all-time for the program in both statistics. He helped the Broncos capture a national title in 2010 during his freshman campaign and then as a senior, Anderson guided CPP to a 28-3 overall record as the team swept the conference's regular season and tournament titles.
Through the historical 2012-13 season, Anderson racked up 10 double-double performances to finish with 13 in his career. Four of those 10 double-double efforts this year came in the final seven games of the season.
Anderson is now the school's leader in three-pointers, knocking down 190 while at CPP. Earlier in March, Anderson picked up California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Most Valuable Player honors for both the regular season and tournament. He's also picked up NABC and Daktronics All-West Region First Team honors for the 2012-13 campaign. Anderson is the only CCAA student-athlete to be featured in this year's Division II All-Star Game.
