WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona's
Mitchel Anderson and
Greg Kamansky earned top honors for the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) as Most Valuable Player and Coach of the Year, conference officials announced Tuesday.
Anderson is the fourth student-athlete in program history to receive the conference's MVP honor, joining the elite company of Terry Ross (1990-91), David Sybesma (2004-05) and Larry Gordon (2008-09).
With Anderson and Kamansky leading the way, the Broncos have captured the school's first-ever outright CCAA regular season title this season. CPP - ranked No. 5 nationally in this week's top 25 poll for Division II - stands at 24-2 overall and 20-2 in league play, the best regular season mark in program history.
Anderson, now a two-time All-CCAA honoree, was named a preseason All-American in October by the Division II Bulletin. Joining Anderson on this year's All-CCAA roster are teammates
Terrence Drisdom, a First Team selection, and Second Team honoree
DeRonn Scott.
The 20-2 CCAA record also makes the Broncos one of only four teams to reach the 20-win regular season mark in conference history. Top-seeded CPP will start the CCAA Tournament tonight with a 7 p.m. matchup against eighth-seeded Sonoma State at Kellogg Gym.
Kamansky is now a four-time CCAA Coach of the Year selection and through his Broncos' career, he owns a 266-109 record for a winning percentage of .709. In his 13th season at CPP, Kamansky has guided the Broncos to at least 20 wins in seven of those years.
Anderson, a senior guard from Temecula, has averaged 14 points and 7.9 rebounds per game this season despite opposing defenses shifting their strategies to limit the production of the Broncos' top scorer. He's collected seven double-double performances this year, including one last week at home against Cal State L.A.
Drisdom has battled back from an injury last year to put together a stellar junior campaign, earning him the first All-CCAA accolade of his career. While averaging 13.3 points per game, he's also contributed mightily to CPP ranking first nationally in defense. Drisdom is averaging a team-best two steals per contest.
Scott, a junior from Etiwanda, has steadily elevated his game through this season and he's posted double-digit scoring totals in each of the last 10 games. Active on offense and defense, Scott ranks third on the team in assists per game and fourth in steals per game. He has also knocked down 32 three-pointers already this year.
