POMONA, Calif. - Justin Ellerbee of the Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field team has earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District Team, officials announced Thursday.
A sophomore from Rocklin, Ellerbee captured a conference title in the pole vault after recording a school-record height of 16-9.5 that ranked sixth nationally this season. As one of three California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) individual champions on the men's side, Ellerbee helped guide the Broncos to a second-place finish at the conference meet.
At the NCAA Division II National Championships in Pueblo, Colo., Ellerbee cleared his second-best height of 2013 with a 15-9 mark that put him 13th overall. He was one of eight Broncos to travel to Colorado for the championship meet. In early May, Ellerbee received All-West Region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Ellerbee has starred in the classroom as well, maintaining a grade point average of 3.85 as an Aerospace Engineering major. In the vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Ellerbee was one of four CCAA student-athletes named to the 12-person Academic All-District Team for the West Region.
Student-athletes must be in at least their second season, hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 and be an important contributor to be eligible for the Capital One Academic All-District teams.
