Seeded No. 1, Broncos to Host West Regional

INDIANAPOLIS - In Sunday's NCAA Division II Selection Show, Cal Poly Pomona baseball earned the No. 1 spot in the West as the Broncos will also serve as the host school of the NCAA Division II West Regional.

Mazmanian Field on the campus of Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) will be the site of competition for the regional. The six-team, double-elimination tournament begins Thursday, May 14, and runs through either Sunday, May 17, or Monday, May 18.

Just the No. 1 seeded Broncos and the No. 5 seeded UC San Diego Tritons were featured in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper national poll released on May 4. CPP (39-14) was ranked at No. 18 nationally while the Tritons (33-19) were 26th.

The Broncos and UCSD are the two representatives of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The other four squads play out of the Pacific West (PacWest) Conference. Azusa Pacific enters as the region's No. 2 team and has tallied an overall 32-18 mark thus far in 2015. California Baptist has locked up the three spot with its 30-20 record. Dixie State comes in at No. 4 with 31 wins and 17 losses. Closing out the West Region and taking the No. 6 seed is Point Loma who has recorded a 33-16 mark.

Cal Poly Pomona was the lone automatic qualifier in the field, securing a 4-0 win for the program's first-ever CCAA Championship tournament title. During the final week of the regular season, CPP clinched the CCAA regular season, which is the first time since 1991 that the Broncos had done so. They were 28-12 in regular season play, also a program record for conference wins.

Winning the PacWest conference was Dixie State, the Red Storm posted a conference record of 24-8, finishing two games ahead of California Baptist. APU and Point Loma tied for fourth in conference play, as both of them registered 19 wins and 13 losses. The PacWest does not have an automatic qualifying tournament.

Three games will be contested on each day on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 14-16, with start times designated as 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. The West Region title game is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 17, at a time to be determined, with the possibility of an if-necessary nightcap. Should California Baptist, Azusa Pacific, or Point Loma still be alive in the tournament at the conclusion of play on Saturday, however, the final round would shift to Monday, May 18.

The confirmed schedule for Thursday features the matchup of CBU Lancers and Dixie State Red Storm at 11 a.m. That game will be followed with a 3 p.m. start time for the APU Cougars and UCSD Tritons and the final game of the day will showcase the CPP Broncos and Point Loma Sea Lions with a 7 p.m. first pitch.

Single-day ticket prices are $8 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors 65 and older. Tournament passes can also be obtained at a rate of $25 for general admission and $15 for students and seniors. Children aged seven and younger will be admitted free. Tickets will be available for purchase 60 minutes prior to the start of the first game each day.

Parking permits are required on the Mt. SAC campus 24/7. They can be purchased at the machine when entering the facility going south on Mt. SAC Way.

All games of the West Regional will feature a live video stream, free of charge with no subscription required, and live stats.

A total of eight six-team regionals will be contested in the coming week. The West Region champion will be joined by the other seven regional winners in Cary, N.C., site once again for the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship at the USA Baseball National Training Complex. That final round takes place May 23-30, with the West Regional champion opening as the road team against the South Regional winner this season based on a seven-year rotation.

The last time Cal Poly Pomona hosted the regional tournament was in 1985, when the Broncos went 3-2. Art Mazmanian, who is the name behind Mt. SAC's field, spent 31 years as the Mounties' head coach. He served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic Baseball team in 1984 where he coached alongside legendary CPP head coach John Scolinos, who is the name behind the Broncos' home field. Baseball superstars Barry Larkin and Mark McGwire played on that 1984 team.
