WALNUT, Calif. – Three hours and 31 minutes after the start of Monday's contest, the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos were crowned the NCAA Division II West Region Champions. CPP defeated conference rival UC San Diego, 7-4, to capture the program's first regional title since 1985.
As the winners of the West Regional, CPP will make its way to Cary, N.C., for the Division II World Series. The Broncos' first game will take place on Sunday as they play the University of Tampa, who will play CPP after becoming the South Regional Champions. It'll be an eight-team, double-elimination format and first pitch for the Broncos on Sunday will be at 4 p.m. Pacific (7 p.m. Eastern).
Kyle Garlick launched two homeruns in the matchup, tying the CPP baseball record set by Travis Taijeron. Overall Monday, Garlick went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and three runs scored. With his performance he earned a selection to the West Region All-Tournament Team.
CPP tallied a total of 11 hits in the contest, with Garlick getting three,
Nick Cooksey and
Mike Philp getting two each, and
Christian Kelley,
Michael Zidek,
Ryan Webberley, and
Jacob Bernardy each getting one.
Starting for CPP was
Ryan Olson, who pitched on just two days' rest. He was one of six Bronco pitchers to take the mound and lasted 2.1 innings, adding a strikeout to his resume for the game. Getting the win on the bump was
Max Bethell, who came in third and pitched 1.2 innings while allowing just three hits and no earned runs. Also coming in to pitch for the Broncos was
Chris Powell,
Zach Williams,
Austin Boyle, and
Cody Ponce to finish it.
Earning spots on the All-Tournament team with Garlick was Kelley, Philp, Webberley, Bethell, and Boyle. Webberley was named the Tournament MVP.
The Tritons posted the first run in the game with a single through the right side. Then Garlick launched his first long ball of the contest in the bottom half of the inning and tied things up at one.
CPP posted two more runs in the second inning with a sacrifice bunt by Bernardy and a single to left field by Kelley. Those two plays boosted CPP to a 3-1 lead.
In a testament to the difficulty of the CCAA, the Tritons were not going to lay down. They added three runs to their score in the top of the third to lead the Broncos 4-3.
Nick Cooksey, a CPP captain, singled to center in the fourth and gave the Green and Gold the lead that they carried through the game.
With the lead the Broncos then tacked on a couple more, with Webberley singling to center to score Zidek and Garlick launching his second homerun of the day in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively.
With the win, the Broncos are the first West Regional host to win the regional since Cal State LA in 2007.
