CLEVELAND – Brian Swanson, the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Cal Poly Pomona was named one of the Under Armour Athletic Directors of the Year for his leadership of the Broncos' Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) announced their decision on Wednesday, March 2.
"While I thank NACDA for this recognition," said Swanson, "the outstanding teammwork by our dedicated and committed university administration, coaches, staff, student-athletes, and friends of Bronco Athletics allows us to be successful. It is a privilege and honor to serve the Cal Poly Pomona community."
The award spans seven divisions (NCAA FBS, FCS, Division I-AAA, II, III, NAIA/Other Four-Year Institutions and Junior College/Community Colleges). Winners will receive their awards during the James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, June 15 at NACDA's 51st Annual Convention at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas.
Swanson joined Cal Poly Pomona as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on May 31, 2005, and became the Broncos' seventh director since 1974 when Intercollegiate Athletics became an official department of the university.
Swanson entered his 11th year at Cal Poly Pomona in 2015-16. The Broncos' athletic and academic achievements have steadily increased under Swanson's leadership and in 2014-15, CPP earned the Robert J. Hiegert Commissioner's Cup, which is awarded to the most successful athletic department in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
After the Commissioner's Cup, Athletics was named the Division of Student Affairs Program of the Year. Under Swanson's leadership, the Broncos placed among the top four finishers in the CCAA Commissioner's Cup standings each of the previous six years.
During Swanson's tenure at CPP, the number of endowments in the department has grown from nine to 14. In 2015-16, baseball installed lights for the first home night games in the program's 56-year history and a new scoreboard, and Kellogg Arena saw the installation of its first-ever video board, making CPP one of just two D-II schools on the West Coast to have one.
Through his tenure, Cal Poly Pomona's teams have collected six West Region titles, two National Runners Up, a third-place national finish, one Final Four appearance, and a National Championship.
In 2014-15, 53 student-athletes graduated while representing all eight colleges at CPP. Through the past eight years, Intercollegiate Athletics has maintained an average GPA of 3.0.
The ADOY Award highlights the efforts of athletics directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to student-athletes, campuses and their surrounding communities.
"In the 18-year history of this program, we have honored over 400 directors of athletics from each segment of the NACDA membership," said Bob Vecchione, NACDA Executive Director. "I would like to congratulate the 2015-16 Under Armour ADOY class of award winners, and look forward to continuing this tradition of honoring the outstanding leadership in our profession for many years to come."

All NACDA-member directors of athletics in the United States, Canada and Mexico who met the criteria were eligible for the award. Among the criteria were service as an AD for a minimum of five academic years; demonstration of commitment to higher education and student-athletes; continuous teamwork, loyalty and excellence; and the ability to inspire individuals or groups to high levels of accomplishments. Additionally, each AD's institution must have passed a compliance check through its appropriate governing body (i.e., NCAA, NAIA, etc.), in which the institution could not have been on probation or cited for a lack of institutional control within the last five years during the tenure of the current athletics director. Swanson has been a long-time member of the Division II Athletics Directors Association and NACDA.
Nominators were NACDA-member directors of athletics, institutional presidents and conference commissioners, as well as other respected intercollegiate athletics administrators. Special Divisional Selection Committees composed of current and former directors of athletics, current and former commissioners and other key athletics administrators voted on nominees for the award. A complete listing of Selection Committee members can be found on NACDA's website at www.nacda.com.
