Broncos Claim West Region Title with 1-0 Win Over Cal Baptist

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team claimed the 2017 NCAA Division II West Region Title over top-seed Cal Baptist with a 1-0 victory on Thursday on the campus of Midwestern State University.

"Delighted to be able to come out of a very demanding West Region. Top to bottom it has been a very difficult schedule and being able to play teams like UC San Diego, Simon Fraser, prepared us to win today," said head coach Adam Reeves.

Entering the tournament as the sixth and final seed, the Broncos (17-5) advanced through the tournament, defeating No.3 Simon Fraser and No. 2 Point Loma before knocking off the top-seeded Lancers, handing them the first loss of the season.

"To hold firm against the top scorer and not give up a goal shows how phenomenal our backline did, they performed their tasks to the tee."

The Broncos (17-5) blanked one of the top offenses in the country as senior keeper Jason Trejos tallied five saves to earn the clean sheet.

CPP jumped out to a quick advantage in the 11th minute of play as Jose Garcia tallied his third goal of the season.

"The entire defense group was fantastic and the first goal so early changed the complexity of the game."

The Broncos held on to the lead for the remainder of the match, facing 26 total shots from the Lancers, who finished with only five landing on target. CPP has only given up one goal the tournament, shutting out the last two opponents in a row.

"Although their shots count was high we were never stressed until maybe the last 15 minutes when they started to throw people in the box, but a lot of shots were out of the box and we'll take that."

This marks the second regional championship for CPP who won it previously in the 2015 season where they finished as runner-up for the national championship.

"Proud of the program, the alumni, and the department. Now we look forward to a difficult game on Saturday."

The Broncos advance to the NCAA Championship Quarterfinals on Saturday, November 18, and will play the winner between Midwestern State and Colorado School of Mines.
