Wheatley was one of the finest NCAA Division I pitchers in the history of the game. When she completed her four-year career in 1987, she was the all-time wins leader with 139 victories and currently stands fifth.

She won three All-American honors and led the Broncos to two College World Series appearances (1984 and 1985). She threw eight no-hitters in her four years.

She earned three All-Big West honors and was named the conference's Player of the Year in 1985. She was a four-time All-West Region honoree.

In 1987, she and teammates Suzy Brazney, Alison Stowell and Donna McElrea played on the gold-medal winning softball team at the Pan American Games, coached by CPP mentor Carol Spanks.
