SAN FRANCISCO – Tyler Reinhart continued his goal streak Friday afternoon and gave Cal Poly Pomona an overtime victory.
Reinhart scored on a breakaway goal in the game's 98th minute – his second of the game – as the visiting Broncos rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat San Francisco State in California Collegiate Athletic Association soccer.
The victory places CPP at the .500 mark at 6-6-0 overall and 4-5 in the CCAA, while SFSU dropped to 5-5-3, 2-4-3.
“That young man is in a zone,'' said Broncos head coach Lance Thompson of the junior forward from Fresno. “Winning in this league on the road is tough and to come back after trailing 2-0 at halftime is a credit to us hanging in there.
“The fellas are having fun right now and it's great to see our hard work pay off.''
Reinhart has now scored seven goals in his last three games and leads the CCAA with 10.
SFSU scored both of its goals on free kicks – both from Arnol Arceta – and the Gators took command in the first 45 minutes.
“Both of those shots were outstanding,'' Thompson said. “It wasn't that Brad (Jones) didn't play well. Sometimes you have to acknowledge your opponent. Credit Arceta for two solid shots.
But CPP regrouped in the second and had momentum leading up to senior Rigo Cardenas' goal at the 71st minute. It was Cardenas' third goal on the season and sophomore Russell Vernon earned the assist.
Eight minutes later, Reinhart showed his midseason scoring spurt again. He got loose on a breakaway and put it past Gators GK Mike McNeill and the score was tied at 2-2 with just less than 10 minutes remaining.
In overtime, Arceta fired a shot that was saved by Broncos GK Chris Otani.
CPP got the ball back and this time, it would be Reinhart again. Freshman Andy Payeras fed Reinhart the ball, who then broke away and earned the game-winner.
The multi-goal game was Reinhart's third this season. He opened the year with three vs. Dominican, but was held scoreless until his school-record four against CSU Dominguez Hills. He added CPP's only goal in the 2-1 loss to No. 2 CSU L.A.
“We played under control,'' Thompson said. “Rigo got us that spark, and Chris played well in the second half. We also got some solid performances off the bench from Payeras and Sean Gurley.
The Broncos continue their trip to the Bay Area with a Sunday game at CSU Monterey Bay.
