BELMONT
– Some familiar names made an impact for Cal Poly Pomona in its season opener against Notre Dame de Namur on Sunday.

But Coach Scott Davis also was rewarded with production from new faces as well.

The combination of the two forces created a 61-44 victory for the Broncos before a crowd of 210 in attendance at Glasson Gym.

Junior Reyana Colson scored a game-high 19 points and sophomore Megan Ford chipped in 12 points for Davis' returners. He also saw junior-college transfer La'Kenya Simon-West pop in 12 points – all 3-pointers – as CPP held a double-digit lead throughout the second half.

“Defensively, that's what set the tone for us,'' Davis said. “They have some very good scorers and to shut them down to 15 points in the first half, good things are going to happen.''

Davis' crew finished off the first half on a 10-0 run in the final 6 minutes and 34 seconds to push a 17-15 lead into a 27-15 halftime advantage. The Broncos were never threatened in the second half and led by as many as 20 in the final 20 minutes.

The Broncos' owned the halftime advantage by outscoring the Argos 10-0 from the free-throw line. For the game, CPP held an eye-popping 18-1 advantage from the charity stripe.

CPP shot 38.8 percent from the field (19-of-49) and held NDNU to 32 percent for the game.

NDNU got as close as 12 points on a Laura Bruni layup with 13:25 remaining and CPP led 36-24.

But the Broncos didn't cut any slack as Simon-West hit the first of her three second-half treys on their next possession and CPP led, 39-24 with 13:11 left in the game.

Colson's double-digit effort was her 26th straight and Ford appeared in her first game since sustaining a torn ACL in early January. Simon-West gave the Broncos a shot-in-the arm in the second half with three of her four 3-pointers. She was 4-of-5 from 19-feet with an assist in 19 minutes.

The Broncos played well defensively, forcing 27 turnovers with 11 steals. Senior Stephisha Walton had just four points, but led the Broncos with seven rebounds and six steals.

The Argos (0-1) were led by C'ani Kealoha with 14 points of f the bench. Laura Zasly had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

“When things got difficult, some of our key components in Reyana and Megan stepped up in some key moments,'' Davis said. “When you have a couple of go to players … that's a big difference.''

The Broncos face Dominican at 5:30 p.m. Monday night.
