NAMPA , Idaho
– Trailing by 14 points with more than 13 minutes remaining, Cal Poly Pomona's women's basketball team answered back with a flurry and held on for a 63-62 victory over Western Oregon in the GNAC/CCAA Challenge, hosted by Northwest Nazarene University.

The Broncos, now 4-1 overall, take on the host school Saturday afternoon to conclude the 2009 portion of the season.

“Winning on the road is a big deal and to earn a hard-fought game like we did is something to build upon,'' Broncos coach Scott Davis said. “We were ineffective early in the paint, but when we made our run it was because of our inside play. Once we got the lead, Reyana Colson did her thing.''

Colson led the Broncos with a season-high 23 points (8-of-17 from the field, 7-of-8 FTs). The double-digit effort was her 30th consecutive and 52nd time in 58 career games.

Senior Stephisha Walton earned her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Her effort off the glass included seven offensive boards.

The Broncos led by five – 21-16 – with 3:59 remaining in the first half. But the Wolves (4-6) improved their play on both ends of the court and closed the half on a 12-2 run and led, 28-23 at halftime.

The Broncos' Sarah Semenero had four turnovers in that stretch and CPP had just one field goal attempt in that span.

“We got away from playing well inside and they took advantage,'' Davis said. “I didn't think we did a very good job of hitting shots inside in the first half.''

Things didn't start off too well, either, once the second half began. The Wolves hit three 3-pointers in the opening three minutes and increased the lead to 37-25 with 17:08 left. Katie Torland added another 3-pointer and WOU had its largest lead of the game (47-33) with 13:07 left.

And that's when the Broncos went to work. Semenero worked inside for a basket, and Colson followed with a pair of FGs and CPP trailed 47-39.

After an Erika Wilson jumper, Ebony White hit a field goal and Walton hit the second of a two-shot foul and CPP cut the lead in half to 49-42 with 8:53 left.

Megan Ford worked inside for two and after Sara Zahler answered with a layup, Walton and Ford each responded with jump shots and CPP trailed 51-48 with 6:31 left.

A three-point play by Wilson increased WOU's lead to six, but the Broncos scored six straight – two FGs by Walton and one by Ebony White and CPP tied the game 54-54 with 4:57 left.

Torland put WOU back on top with a pair of free throws, but that would be its last lead. Colson worked free down low and earned the and-one and CPP had its first lead since the first half at 57-56 with 4:31 left.

Down the stretch the Broncos led as much as three and it seemed CPP had control, leading 63-60 after Walton hit a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left.

But Semenero was called for an intentional foul with two seconds left, putting Shayla Corder at the line for two shots and WOU having the ball. Corder hit both and after each team called time out, WOU had a shot for the win.

Torland's shot, however, was off the mark at the buzzer and CPP earned the win.
