POMONA – No. 16 Cal Poly Pomona wasted little time in gaining control against visiting UC San Diego on Friday night.
Leading 17-7 with 11:36 remaining in the first half, the Broncos enjoyed a 14-0 run over the next four minutes and went on to earn a 68-46 victory before a crowd of 1,018 at Kellogg Gym on Saturday night.
The victory places CPP at 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. UCSD dropped to 0-4, 0-2.
Cal Poly Pomona took advantage of what has become a staple in the program under coach
Greg Kamansky. The Broncos fired 50.9 percent from the floor and held their opponent to less than 50 points.
Those are key numbers as the Broncos are now 91-6 (a 93.8 percent) under Kamansky when they shoot better than 50 percent from the floor and have won 29 of their last 30 games when an opponent is held to less than 50 points.
“We played our best basketball of the season in the first half,'' Kamansky said. “I thought we executed very well with an intensity that carried over well into our offensive flow. We had just three turnovers in the first half and that really set the tone for the night.''
Junior
Tobias Jahn led the Broncos with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor. Senior
Austin Swift added 13 and junior
Donnelle Booker also hit double figures with 11.
Swift added six assists and point guard
Dahir Nasser dealt five assists with eight points as the Broncos totaled 20 assists on the evening and kept their record perfect at home in the all-time series against the Tritons at 11-0.
Reserve
Mark Rutledge also played a big role in the first half as he scored all eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, in the first 20 minutes.
Jordan Lawley scored a game-high 20 for the Tritons. Jake Tarabilda was next with eight. The Tritons were held to 31.1 percent from the floor on 14-of-45 shooting. They were held to just five field goals in the first half.
CPP is off until Dec. 16 when it plays at Vanguard. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Broncos return to CCAA play Jan. 2 at Cal State Stanislaus.
BRONCO NOTES: Jahn, who led the CCAA in FG percentage last season, leads CPP in shooting at 56. 7 percent… Swift's six assists tied his career for the fourth time… Sophomore
Dwayne Fells had five offensive rebounds for the second time this season.
