No. 13 UCSD controls second half, hands CPP 48-43 loss

– No. 13 UC San Diego grabbed control of its women's basketball game against host Cal Poly Pomona midway through the second half and earned a hard-fought 48-43 victory at Kellogg Gym on Saturday night. 

The Tritons improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the CCAA, while CPP is 3-1 and 1-1. 

Leading 30-27 with 13:46 remaining in the game, Cal Poly Pomona was stopped offensively and UC San Diego forged ahead. Megan Ford scored two layups in the first six and half minutes of the second half and CPP led 30-27 with 13:46 remaining. 

But the Broncos were held without a field over the next nine minutes and UCSD gained control. The Tritons outscored their foe 13-1 with two field goals from Chelsea Carlisle and two from Annette Ilg and UCSD led 40-31 with 4:57 left. 

Ford ended CPP's field goal drought with a jump shot with 4:41 left and La'kenya Simon-West scored a 3-pointer after Carlisle hit a layup and CPP trailed 42-36 with 3:07 left. 

Junior guard Reyana Colson answered with a three-point play after she was fouled by Daisy Feder and CPP got to within three, 42-39 with 1:59 left. 

UCSD's Tiffany Hunter put her team up by five with a pair of free throws (44-39) and Colson responded with a field goal. But the Tritons got another basket from Carlisle and Ilg hit two free throws and UCSD went on to earn the win. 

Colson led CPP with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Ford also had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Broncos had 24 turnovers for the game and hit just 1-of-8 from the free throw line in the second half. 

Carlisle led the Tritons with 16 points and Hunter had 13. The Tritons were held to 32.7 percent shooting (18-of-55), but were 10-of-16 from the FT line. 

Only five Broncos reached the scoring column. Simon-West had eight , Stephisha Walton had seven and Rosslyn Beard had two. 

CPP is off until Dec. 18 when it plays Western Oregon in the GNAC/CCAA Challenge at Nampa, Idaho and hosted by Northwest Nazarene. The Broncos face the host school on Dec. 19. 

The Broncos return to CCAA play Jan. 2 at Cal State Stanislaus. 

BRONCO NOTES: Colson scored in double figures for the 29 straight and 51 in her 57 career games… The Broncos need seven victories to become only the second Division II program to record 800 wins. Bentley opened the season with 823.
