BELMONT – Freshman
Ashley Salerno (Chino Hills) earned her second straight shutout and her Cal Poly Pomona teammates were more than up to the task as they scored three second-half goals to defeat host Notre Dame de Namur 4-0 in nonconference women's soccer Saturday.
Salerno produced three saves and the Broncos earned goals from four different players in the one-sided rout.
“We're very happy to open the season on the road with a pair of wins,'' Broncos coach
Isabelle Harvey said. On the outside and on the inside we were effective again. We got scoring from four different players and any coach will tell that when you can spread the wealth, it's a good sign.''
Junior
Alicia Gutierrez (Fontana) put the Broncos on the scoreboard inside the game's second minute on a loose ball gathered from a corner kick.
It would remain 1-0 until the 43rd minute when senior
Mary Carroll (Upland) scored on an assist from sophomore
Callie Wilson (Riverside). The goal was Carroll's second of the season and her 25th of her career – seventh in career goals in CPP history.
Sophomore
Justin Barclay (Rancho Cucamonga) earned an unassisted goal in the 76th minute for her second in as many games.
Sophomore
Carolyn Rubendall (Concord) completed the scoring for CPP with a penalty kick in the 86th minute.
The Broncos return home for the home opener against Central Washington at 2 p.m. Monday. The game will be played on CPP's practice field (adjacent to Kellogg Field), as Kellogg Field's surface is not ready for play since it was reconfigured this summer.
