POMONA – For the first time since 2000, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team has opened a season with three straight shutouts.

Senior Cody McClure (Anaheim Hills) broke free in the early going and drove a shot past Central Washington goalkeeper Amber Easterbrook at the 4-minute mark and the Broncos made sure the score held up on a smoky, hot day in Southern California.

The victory places CPP at 3-0 overall as it now prepares for its final nonconference game when the Broncos face visiting Dixie State at 12 p.m. Thursday.

Coach Isabelle Harvey said she was pleased with how her team approached and played the contest. It marked their third game in five days after the Broncos finished a road trip to the Bay Area on Saturday afternoon.

“That we had our legs and continued to play hard throughout on a hot day with bad air is a credit to our team'' she said. “Again, we played sound on defense and earned another shutout. Cody made the most of her opportunity and made sure it held up.

“We've played well in our games and will have another tough one against Dixie State on Thursday.''

It was McClure's second goal in three games.

Sophomore Ashley Salerno (Chino Hills) posted her third straight shutout. She had just one save.

The Broncos outshot the Wildcats 9-8 and had five shots on goal to CWU's one.

The Broncos held the advantage in corner kicks (5-4). CWU had 10 fouls on the afternoon to CPP's five.

Junior Britany Garrett (Lakewood) had three shots and senior Mary Carroll (Upland) totaled three – all SOG.

Carson McKole totaled three shots and had the sole SOG for CWU, now 0-3.

The game was played under the backdrop of the Station fire that has encapsulated most of the greater Los Angeles basin since Wednesday.

Cal Poly Pomona has now opened a season with three shutouts three times in its history – 1991, 2000 and 2009. They'll go for a school record four Thursday.
