POMONAAlicia Gutierrez (Fontana) kept the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team undefeated through four games this season when she delivered a free kick in the 101st minute of play Friday as the Broncos defeated visiting Dixie State 2-1 in double overtime.

The victory was CPP's fourth in eight days as they are idle until Sept. 11 when it travels to Cal State L.A. to begin the California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

“We needed everyone today because it's not easy to play four games in eight days,'' said Broncos coach Isabelle Harvey. “We have a well-deserved break ahead of us and our ladies have worked extremely hard to win four straight.''

The Broncos' unbeaten streak is their best start since the 2000 squad went 5-0 to begin its season. That team eventually finished 14-5 overall and earned a CCAA Tournament berth.

Gutierrrez' shot was an impressive one as she drew the assignment on the free kick after a Dixie State foul. She fired a shot that was to the right of Dixie State's wall and the ball was driven up and right past Red Storm goalkeeper Tonya Smith for the game-winner.

“Alicia fired off an amazing shot,'' Harvey said. “She had some power behind it and left little doubt.''

CPP was kept in check in the first half with just two shots in the opening 45 minutes. Once the second half began, the Broncos fired three SOG – one each by sophomore Justine Barclay (Toronto, Canada), senior Mary Carroll (Upland) and senior Cody McClure (Anaheim Hills) – before McClure put the Broncos on the scoreboard in the 52nd minute for her team-leading third goal this season.

Carroll had the ball and passed it back to McClure, who set up about 30 yards out. She placed the ball high and it flew past Smith and CPP led 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 before DSC broke through late. Mikala Wilkes drove from the left and got the ball from teammate Kelsey Tesoro. Wilkes then kicked it right and got past Bronco goalkeeper Ashley Salerno (Chino Hills).

The goal was the first scored by the opposition this season in a span of 356 minutes.

CPP outshot DSC 3-1 in the first OT and fired the only shot of the second OT.
