Box Score: CPP vs. CSU San Bernardino
POMONA – Cal Poly Pomona jumped out to a 17-4 lead inside the first six and a half minutes against visiting Cal State San Bernardino and went on to a 63-46 victory in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's basketball on Tuesday night.
The Broncos, who were led by senior Stephisha Walton's 16 points, are off to their best start since they won their fifth national championship in the 2001-02 season. The title team also won nine of its first 11 games before expanding it to an 18-2 start.
The victory over the Coyotes was their first in Pomona in three seasons and first for Davis since he took over the program in 2007-08.
CPP (9-2, 6-1) never trailed in its game against the Coyotes (7-5, 3-4) and enjoyed a lead as large as 25 in the second half. Ten players saw action and coach Scott Davis received scoring from nine.
Walton, who was named CCAA Player of the Week this week, capped her team-high scoring effort with five rebounds and three assists and shot 6-of-12 from the floor with a 4-of-5 effort from the free throw line.
Junior
Reyana Colson added 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting and sophomore Megan Ford chipped in 12 points for CPP, which shot 44.6 percent from the floor (25-of-56) and out-rebounded the Coyotes, 42-31.
Sophomore
Rosslyn Beard added nine points and three roubnds with one block for CPP.
The Coyotes were led by Krystal Urzua's game-high 22 points on 6-of-17 field goals that included three 3-pointers. Emily Vore had 10.
Cal Poly Pomona returns to Kellogg Gym on Friday night when they play host to Cal State Dominguez Hills. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
BRONCO NOTES: Defensive dominance can be found when teams force more turnovers than field goals allowed. The game marked the sixth time CPP accomplished that feat this season… Walton's offensive output was her third consecutive double-digit scoring effort. She entered the game as one of two players in the CCAA who average a double-double (an even 10 points and 10 rebounds)… Three players had three or more assists on the night (Ford 4, Colson 4 and Walton 3)… The Broncos fired 12-of-14 from the free throw line as Ford (4-4) and Colson (3-3) were perfect on the night.
