POMONA – Post play figured big-time in Friday night's game between visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills and 20th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona. The Toros got production from centers James Cawthorne and Amir Aguilar and shut down the Broncos.
The Toros' big men combined for 26 points as they earned a 58-49 victory over the Broncos in California Collegiate Athletic Association play before a crowd of 437 at Kellogg Gym.
Cawthorne scored a game-high 16 points and Aguilar scored 10 points off the bench as the Toros, now 5-8 overall and 5-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, utilized back-to-back 3-point plays for momentum that carried them to the victory.
Trailing 25-20 at halftime, CPP got back into the game when
Mark Rutledge hit a 3-pointer and
Dahir Nasser followed with a jumper and the Broncos led 35-34 with 12:58 remaining in the game.
After Tim McLaurin hit a 3-pointer to lift CSUDH back in front (37-35), freshman reserve
Kevin Ryan answered with a layup and was fouled. The El Segundo native converted on the 3-point play and CPP led, 38-37 with 11:39 left.
But the Toros responded in a flurry as Robert Wilhite scored on a 3-point play and McLaurin hit another 3-pointer and the Toros led 43-38 with 11 minutes left.
The Broncos returned the favor with a 7-2 spurt, capped by Nasser's layup that tied the game at 45-45 with 7:46 left.
That would be the last tie of the game, however, as CPP had two missed shots and a turnover, and when reserve Marcquintice Davis hit a 3-pointer with 5:56 left and CSUDH led, 48-45.
The Broncos couldn't get any closer than two points and were handed their second straight home loss – the first time that's occurred since 2006-07 when they lost to Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State Bakersfield.
The Broncos, who dropped to 7-4 and 5-3, were led by senior Austin Swift's 10 points and nine rebounds – all in the first half. CPP was shut down in the middle as
Donnelle Booker scored three points and junior
Tobias Jahn was held scoreless.
Rutledge scored nine points – all on 3-pointers – and also had seven rebounds. The Broncos shot 38 percent from the floor on 19-of-50 shooting.
The Toros also scored 19 field goals, but turned the ball over just eight times and forced 16 CPP turnovers.
CPP returns to Kellogg Gym on Saturday night when it plays host to Cal State L.A. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
