POMONA
– Leland Jones picked up the ball from a scrum and tossed up a 5-foot shot with 2.1 seconds left that gave visiting Cal State L.A. a 54-53 victory over No. 20 Cal Poly Pomona in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball Saturday night.

The victory was the first time in their last 20 meetings that the Golden Eagles defeated the Broncos. CSULA last defeated the Broncos 75-73 in OT on Dec. 4, 1999.

The victory also was CSULA's first in Pomona since the 1996-97 season.

The Broncos were led by sophomore Dwayne Fells' 14 points and freshman reserve Mitchel Anderson had 11 for CPP, which has lost its last three games -- all at home.

CPP trailed 36-28 with 16:16 to go and climbed back into the game with a solid 9-1 run in a four- minute stretch .

A Fells basket, a free throw from Donnelle Booker, field goals from Matthew Rosser and Kevin Ryan brought the Broncos to within two points, 37-35, with 14:00 minutes left.

Two free throws from Dahir Nasser tied the game for the fifth time at 37-37 with 12:10 remaining.

CSULA went back on top with a Chris Robinson jumper, but CPP answered immediately with a 9-2 run that was capped by Anderson's 3-pointer with 8:50 left and the Broncos led, 48-41.

But the Golden Eagles were not about to be denied  with their pivotal run and held CPP without a field goal over a six-minute span and outscored CPP 9-0 in that stretch.

Nuno Furtado put CSULA out front, 50-48 with 2:38 left.

After Austin Swift gave CPP a 51-50 lead on a 3-pointer with 1:31 left, the Golden Eagles responded on Furtado's layup with 54 second remaining.

On the Broncos' next possession, Fells was fouled by Furtado and the sophomore from Fullerton hit them both to put CPP ahead, 53-52 with 23 seconds left.

CSULA worked the ball to half court and called time with 15 seconds left. They worked the ball inside, and Jones missed a jumper. The missed shot resulted in a scrum inside the paint, and Jones got control of the ball, put up a five-footer while leaning away from the standard and the shot went in.

Carl Hoffman led CSULA with 13 points and Jones and Chris Fields each had 11.
