POMONA
– The one-two combination of Cal Poly Pomona senior Stephisha Walton and junior Reyana Colson was more than enough to offset visiting Cal State Los Angeles as the Broncos defeated the Golden Eagles 61-53 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play Saturday night.

Walton and Colson each scored 20 points and each had perfect nights at the free throw line as the Broncos won their seventh straight and improved to 11-2 overall and 8-1 in the CCAA.

Walton was 8-of-8 from the free throw line with 16 rebounds and Colson was 12-of-12 FTs with seven rebounds in a ball game controlled by CPP.

It took five minutes before the Broncos gained the lead for good. Trailing 10-8 with 15:37 remaining in the first half, a pair of free throws from both Walton and Colson put CPP out front 12-10 and they never looked back.

They held a 29-24 halftime lead and enjoyed a lead as large as 13 when Rosslyn Beard hit a jumper to push CPP out front 37-24 with 17:59 remaining in the game.

CSULA answered back with a 9-2 spurt over a five-minute span. Brionna Baker hit a jumper and cut the Broncos lead to 39-33 with 13:56 left.

After Megan Fordhit a free throw to give CPP a 53-43 lead with five minutes left, the Golden Eagles made a final run, hitting six straight points – a layup and two free throws from Baker and a Jazzi Johnson layup – to cut the lead to 53-49 with 2:51 left.

CPP answered right back, getting two free throws from Colson that ignited a 8-0 run that closed the door on its opponent.

Baker and Johnson each scored 13 for the Golden Eagles and Shatori Dearman had 12.

CPP outscored CSULA 24-12 at the free throw line and shot 34 percent (18-of-54) from the field.

The Broncos return to play Friday night when they play at San Francisco State.
