Dahir Nasser hit the front end of a two-shot foul with 20 seconds remaining and 14th ranked Cal Poly Pomona hung on for a 51-50 victory over host Cal State Stanislaus in California Collegiate Athletic Association play Saturday afternoon.
CPP, which won its fourth straight in Warrior Gym, improved its winning streak to five and stands 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the CCAA.
CSU Stanislaus is now 4-4 and 0-3.
The teams were evenly matched as neither team led by more than six points. Senior
Austin Swift gave the Broncos a little bit of breathing room when he hit his fifth 3-pointer of the game, lifting CPP ahead 50-47 with 1:29 left.
But the Warriors' Chad Johnson answered with a three of his own with 50 seconds remaining to tie the game for the sixth time.
The Broncos held the ball for 30 seconds before Nasser was fouled by Prince Abidoye with 20 seconds left. The Phoenix native hit the front end, but missed the second and the Warriors had a shot for the game-winner.
The Broncos had one foul to give and junior
Donnelle Booker (San Bernardino) was called for his second personal with five seconds left. Johnson fired off a shot with two seconds left, but it didn't go down.
Swift scored a game and season-high 19 points on the strength of a 5-for-6 effort from the 3-point line. Nasser also scored a season-high with 11 points and Booker finished with 10.
The Broncos fired 48.6 percent from the field (18-of-37) and again, were solid defensively. The Broncos held their opponent to 50 points or less for the fifth straight game – a school-record – and will remain the NCAA's top scoring defense at 47.7 points/game.
Johnson led CSUS with 16 points and Abidoye had 12.
The Broncos complete the weekend at Chico State on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
BRONCO NOTES: The Broncos improved their record to 31-1 when they hold an opponent to 50 points or less during the
Greg Kamansky era… Swift has led the Broncos in scoring in five of their six games… The double-digit effort from Swift was his 23rd in his career and CPP is 18-5 in those games… The Broncos' bench was outscored 11-2 with
Mitchel Anderson hitting a pair of free throws. The bench fired a collective 0-of-9 from the field.
