1/26/2010 2:33:51 PM

On Monday, Feb. 1, about 80,000 people statewide are expected attempt to break the Guinness World Record for "Most People Skipping Rope at the Same Time." The current record is held by schoolchildren in Australia, where about 59,000 skipped rope simultaneously in 2008.

At Cal Poly Pomona, the Kinesiology Health Promotion Club will host the event at 9 a.m. at the Kellogg Gym. The entire campus community is invited to participate. In addition, motivational speaker and basketball entertainer Sandy "Spin" Slade will cheer on jumpers and perform basketball tricks.

If you need to brush up on your jump rope skills, free practice/training sessions will be held a week earlier on Tuesday, Jan. 26 and Thursday, Jan. 28 at noon in Building 43, room 128. Registration will also be available during the practice sessions.

Pre-registration is required, and participants need to arrive by 8:20 a.m. on Feb. 1 to check in. Walk-in registration will be open from 7 to 8:30 a.m. For more details or to sign up, call (909) 869-2768 or email KHP club advisor H. Teri Spohn at htspohn@csupomona.edu or club president Kinga Matusik at rwkinga@hotmail.com.

The sign-up fee is $1, and proceeds benefit the American Heart Association. Jump ropes will be available to purchase for $4 or rent for $1.

The statewide event is also sponsored by Jamba Juice, the American Heart Association and the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. For more information, visit www.cahperd.org/Jump_Over_the_Record/.
