Box Score: CPP vs. Humboldt State

POMONA
– Senior Stephisha Walton played the game of her Bronco career Saturday night, scoring 18 points with 18 rebounds as Cal Poly Pomona ran away with a 66-50 victory over visiting Humboldt State in California Collegiate Athletic Association play at Kellogg Gym.

“Stephisha plays so hard under the basket and made some big shot tonight,'' Broncos coach Scott Davis said. “Shoot, she had a double-double at halftime and we showed so much depth against a quality opponent.''

Walton fired 5-of-8 from the field and hit eight free throws for a season-high and missed her career high by one point.

But off the glass, the Vallejo native was dominant. Her rebound total was a career-best and is the second-best total in the CCAA this season.

CPP, now 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the CCAA, struck with a 14-2 run midway through the first half to gain control. Trailing 11-7 with 11:50 remaining, Walton began the run with a free throw. Juniors Reyana Colson answered with a layup and a pair of free throws and La'kenya Simon-West hit a pair of free throws and CPP led 14-11 with 8:58 left.

Senior Jessica Duran responded with a layup and after HSU's Brittney Taylor scored down low, the Broncos scored five quick points – free throws from Colson and a 3-point play from Walton and CPP led 21-13.

The Broncos then finished the half on a 10-1 run and went into halftime with a 36-22 lead.

CPP extended its lead in the second 20 minutes to as large as 23 twice to earn its first-ever home win over the Lumberjacks (9-3, 7-1).

Simon-West was the only other Bronco in double figures with 11 and Colson saw her 34-game streak of double-digit scoring games end at nine.

“We knew that Reyana was right there, but to show how unselfish she is, she had a drive to the basket and decided that Nicolette (Brown) was uncontested,'' Davis said. “Her teammates think the world of Reyana and that play showed the type of player and teammate she is.''

The Broncos shot 42.6 percent from the floor (23-of-54) and held the Jacks to 30.2 percent from the floor.
Bree Halsey led HSU with 15 points. Paige Peterson and Luiza Osborne each had eight.

The Broncos return to Kellogg Gym on Tuesday night when they play host to Cal State San Bernardino. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.

BRONCO NOTES: The Broncos' 8-2 start is their best since they went 8-2 to open the 2004-05 season – their last NCAA Tournament appearance… Colson has scored 935 career points… Walton's personal-best rebound total is 19 against Concordia St. Paul, set at last year's Disney Classic.
