POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team, despite outshooting the visitors 19-9, dropped a 2-0 decision at home Sunday to Cal State San Bernardino.
The Broncos allowed an early first-half goal, which eventually stood up as the game-winner. The Coyotes added a score in the 59th minute and despite the CPP attack hitting the post twice late in the match, CSUSB held the 2-0 advantage at the conclusion of the contest.
CPP falls to 5-6-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and 7-6-1 overall, while the Coyotes improve to 8-3-1 through CCAA play and 10-3-1 overall. The Coyotes and Broncos entered the week at
No. 3 and No. 4 in the NCAA West Region rankings.
CSUSB struck first at the 6:30 mark Sunday when Juan Galarza broke free from a scramble and lined it past Broncos' goalkeeper
Andrew Todd to give the Coyotes an early 1-0 lead. The CPP offense held a 6-2 shot advantage at the end of the first half but CSUSB still took the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
The second goal of the match came from the Coyotes at 58:40 with the score coming from Jose Godinez, who assisted on the Galarza play earlier in the contest.
The best chances for the Broncos came in the 84th and 85th minutes, as shots from
Nicholas Jimenez and
Anthony Salcedo bounced off the post but eventually away from the box.
CSUSB keeper Tanner Olinger posted eight saves en route to the shutout.
Up next for the Broncos will be a Friday home match against UC San Diego. Kickoff for that contest is set for 4:30 p.m.
