POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team picked up an impressive 2-1 win Friday night against UC San Diego, a squad that entered the match with an unbeaten streak stretching back to Sept. 19.
"We've been working with our forwards on mobility and they showed it tonight,” CPP head coach Lance Thompson said. “Tyler Reinhart and Luis Gonzalez were very active and helped jumpstart the offense."
The Broncos improve to 8-6-1 overall and 6-6-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Tritons drop to 6-5-4 overall and 6-4-3 through league play.
Broncos attack clicked early with the first score coming at the 10:52 mark. Gonzalez sent a cross along the ground from the left side into the center of box for Reinhart as he charged in. Reinhart placed a hard shot to the left of UCSD goalkeeper Josh Cohen, giving the Broncos a 1-0 lead.
The Tritons' best chance of the opening half came in the 30th minute, when Kasra Sarabakhsh sent a free kick just to the left of the net.
CPP ended up taking the 1-0 lead into the half while holding a 7-6 advantage in shots.
The Broncos' attack struck again in the 53rd minute on another play set up with a stellar through ball. Anthony Salcedo found Gonzalez sprinting into the box and Gonzalez rattled a shot past Cohen to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
The Tritons pressed late and ended up getting on the board at 88:32. Cory Wolfrom sent a cross to the far post for Jared Kukura, who bumped a header past Broncos' keeper Tony Iniguez.
In the end though, CPP held on for the 2-1 victory as Iniguez earned the win in his first career start. The sophomore goalkeeper from Inglewood, Calif., totaled seven saves Friday night. UCSD closed the match with an 18-12 shots advantage over the Broncos but the rally for the visitors came too late in regulation.
Up next, the Broncos will host Cal State East Bay at 11:30 a.m. Sunday as the CPP home crowd will be celebrating Senior Day.
