POMONA, Calif. –
The Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball team ended up on the winning side of a five-game match Saturday night, as the Broncos defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 3-2 in Darlene May Gym.

The Broncos took the final game, 15-12, with freshman Katie Colin serving and leading CPP on a 3-0 run to close it out. Colin contributed 44 assists Saturday out of her setting role. The first four game scores between the two squads were 21-25, 26-24, 25-21 and 19-25.

“In our team meeting after the match, I commended Katie on the job she did tonight,” Broncos' head coach Rosie Wegrich said. “She was taking a lot of feedback from the bench through the five games and she adjusted nicely. I thought she handled the pressure really well.”

CPP improves to 7-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and 9-11 overall, while the visiting Toros drop to 2-13 through league play and 2-18 overall. Three Broncos tallied double-digit kills: Kristin McNeese (13), Lindsey Poulos (11) and Jessica Doerner (10). Sophomore libero Kelly Bonja registered 22 digs on the evening.

In the first game Saturday, the Toros went to freshman outside hitter Denise Devine regularly. With the score 16-11, the Broncos survived multiple strikes from Dixon on the left side but the Lake Elsinore native finally broke through for the kill. Several plays later, Doerner and Taylr Kreutziger combined for a block on Devine.

The Toros captured the first game, 25-21, as CSUDH went to Devine and Elaine Hicks equally on the attack. CPP had 16 attack attempts from Doerner in that span, twice that of any other Bronco.

CPP and CSUDH battled tight in the second frame, with the Toros taking a 23-22 lead on a Bronco attack error. Wegrich called a timeout and CPP followed with a combined block from Poulos and Colin and then a kill from Kreutziger en route to the win.

The two squads went back and forth again in the third game, as kills from Poulos seemingly ended every long run from the Toros. With the Broncos evening the score at 21-21 and taking possession, Diana Lake served and led CPP to a 4-0 run to close it out.

Despite digging themselves in a 12-6 hole early in the fourth, the Broncos found their rhythm at the net defensively later in the game. The line of Lake, Kreutziger and Poulos sent back several Toro hits in that stretch and CPP eventually cut the lead to 17-16. The Broncos ended the match with 16 block assists, to CSUDH's 12. The Toros finished the fourth on a 5-0 run though, evening the game score at 2-2.

In the final frame, the Broncos took a 4-0 run into the swapping of sides with McNeese serving. CPP held a 9-5 lead at that point and to finish off the match, it was a McNeese kill to the back row of the court that put the Broncos over the top. Saturday's match lasted two hours and 27 minutes.

Up next, CPP will host eighth-ranked Cal State San Bernardino at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Darlene May Gym.
