POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team highlighted the achievements of seniors Tyler Reinhart, Nathan Braunwalder and Justin Valashinas Sunday in a pregame ceremony. Once the match got started, Luis Gonzalez provided plenty of highlights for the fans.
The junior from Long Beach, Calif., recorded four goals and two assists, enough to set a new single-game California Collegiate Athletic Association record for points in a match with 10. The previous record was set on Sept. 21, 2006 by Andres Ripa of Humboldt State with nine points on that day.
Gonzalez also tied the all-time conference mark for goals in one game, matching Reinhart's four scores from Oct. 2, 2009.
With the win Sunday, the Broncos improve to 9-6-1 overall and 7-6-1 in the CCAA. The Pioneers fall to 2-14-2 overall and 1-11-2 through league play. The victory pushes CPP into fourth place in the South Division.
Sean Gurley registered three assists Sunday, on the match's first three scores, and that total matches the Broncos' all-time single-game record. The last person to record that amount was Jonathan Bornstein, who netted that total twice in 2003.
CPP struck first in the 22nd minute, when an outlet pass from Jonathan Enns went to Gurley for a quick two-touch and onto Gonzalez. Entering the box on the left, Gonzalez ripped a shot to the upper right corner of the net.
Less than three minutes later, a Gurley corner kick bent toward the net and the ball bounced out of the keeper's hands. Gonzalez flicked the rebound chance just across the line, before a Pioneers' defender tried to clear it out.
The Broncos' third goal came in the 30th minute, as a pair of tremendous one-touch passes from Gonzalez and Gurley led to Enns knocking it home.
With just about four minutes left in the half, CPP netted its fourth score of the match. An unsuccessful clear from CSUEB netminder Bryce Bookhamer caromed off Anthony Salcedo, who smartly fired a quick shot over the head of the keeper.
Despite the Pioneers' coaching staff switching goalkeepers at intermission, the Broncos' offensive fireworks didn't stop. At 51:55, Salcedo recorded his second goal of the game after terrific passes from Gonzalez and Fabian Perez.
Less than three minutes later, Gonzalez recorded his third score of the match. On that play, Enns sent it to Ricardo Reyes, who lifted a cross to the far post for Gonzalez's easy chance at the empty net.
The final goal came at 71:17, when a long pass from Valashinas found Gonzalez on the left. He charged into the box and lifted a shot past CSUEB netminder Patrick Gilbertson.
Salcedo's two goals marks a career high for him, while Gurley's three points also sets a new career mark. In net for the Broncos, Tony Iniguez recorded his first career shutout with five saves on the day.
CPP ended up outshooting the visiting Pioneers Sunday, 39-9. Earlier in the season at Hayward, Calif., the Broncos took 44 shots to CSUEB's eight, but that match ended in a 1-1 draw.
In a tremendous team effort, CPP racked up 10 assists Sunday. That total sets a new program high, with the previous mark being seven against Cal State Bakersfield in 1983.
Up next, the Broncos will travel to play Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday at 7 p.m.
