Broncos Drop Wednesday Match to Coyotes, 3-0

POMONA, Calif. –
The Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 decision to eighth-ranked Cal State San Bernardino at home Wednesday night in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.

The Broncos fall to 7-9 in CCAA play and 9-12 overall, while the Coyotes improve to 15-1 during league play and 19-2 overall. Jane Chafeh, a 2009 All-American, led CSUSB Wednesday with 15 kills. Diana Lake paced the Broncos' squad with seven kills on .500 hitting. That .500 percentage marked a season high for the sophomore from Covina, Calif. Setter Katie Colin contributed 19 assists on the night for CPP.

The Broncos jumped out to early leads in the first and second games but the Coyotes rallied to pull even and then pull away, securing scores of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-18.

The visiting CSUSB squad hit at a .313 clip, while the Broncos fired at .129. The first game proved to be the most exciting for the 232 fans in attendance at Darlene May Gym, as the frame featured 10 different plays with the score tied.

CPP jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the opening game with Lindsey Poulos serving but the Coyotes bounced back to force a 6-6 tie. At one point the Broncos held an 11-9 lead and the game moved to 16-16 later on. From there, CSUSB pushed out to a 7-0 run with Morgan Carty serving and took the game 25-17.

CPP took a 3-0 lead out of the gates in the second game but later with the Coyotes up 10-8, CSUSB captured the next five points to widen the advantage to seven. Facing a 24-16 deficit, the Broncos managed to outlast five game points with three Lake kills in that span but the Coyotes clinched the game with a successful attack from Nicole Moore.

CSUSB carried its momentum out of the intermission between games two and three, taking an 8-1 lead to start the third frame. The CPP squad found itself down 23-12 but again rallied to end the game at 25-18.

The Broncos will be back in action on Friday when they host Humboldt State at 7 p.m. After that, CPP will close out its five-match homestand with a 1 p.m. match Saturday against Sonoma State.
