POMONA, Calif. – Junior Kristin McNeese collected 18 kills, the second-best total of her career, leading the Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Humboldt State Friday night at Darlene May Gym.
The Broncos dominated the first two games, picking up 25-18, 25-14 victories, before dropping the third game 25-21. CPP rebounded in convincing fashion to capture the fourth and final game, 25-12.
McNeese's hitting percentage of .424 also stands as the second-best mark of her career. Freshman Sinead Palmer also turned in an impressive night of offense for the Broncos, tallying 13 kills on a sparkling .619 hitting percentage. Friday marked the third double-digit kill game of Palmer's career.
The CPP squad jumped out to 5-0 leads in both the first and second games. Palmer put together a nearly perfect first frame, registering six kills on seven attempts. The Broncos continued to build the advantage, leading the Lumberjacks 11-3 at one point. HSU rallied back to a four-point deficit at 12-8 but CPP kept its distance and finished the game with a McNeese kill after a Palmer serve.
The Broncos built another sizeable advantage in game two, taking a 13-4 lead early. The margin swayed consistently between six and nine points as Jessica Doerner, who finished the night with 11 kills, got in on the attack action for CPP. A kill from Lindsey Poulos closed out game number two.
McNeese found some serious rhythm in the third game, helping the Broncos establish a 18-13 lead late in the frame. The Lumberjacks' Channel Washington pieced together some strong attacks of her own, as HSU went from being down 20-15 to going up 22-20. A kill from Washington secured the first victory for the Lumberjacks of the night, 25-21.
The third game turned into just a bump in CPP's road to victory though, as the Broncos methodically pieced together small runs in the fourth game. It was a team effort in that frame, as Palmer, McNeese, Doerner and Diana Lake continued to contribute.
Setter Katie Colin recorded 46 assists on the evening, which is the highest amount for her in a home match since early September.
The Broncos will return to action Saturday with a 1 p.m. match against Sonoma State. The Seawolves are 9-7 in CCAA play and 12-8 overall.
