LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team put together several strong second-half chances Sunday but ultimately dropped a 2-0 decision to host UCSD.
CPP falls to 5-4-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. UCSD improves to 3-4-3 overall and 2-3-2 in league action.
The Broncos and Tritons combined for 20 shots in the first half but both teams experienced some trouble landing the attempts on frame.
Roughly 10 minutes into the opening period, CPP put together the match's first serious scoring opportunity. Broncos' junior
Jonathan Enns dribbled to the top of the box and launched a shot that swung just over the crossbar.
At the 24:58 mark, CPP found itself with another chance to break the 0-0 deadlock. With his back to the net, forward
Luis Gonzalez spun with the ball and shot from the right corner of the box. His attempt sailed just high and right of the net.
With the score still 0-0 at halftime, the Broncos continued to put pressure on the Tritons' defense as the second half began. Junior
Anthony Salcedo took matters into his own hands, sliding up the right side and bending a long shot toward the frame. The ball hit the far post and bounced away from danger, leaving CPP empty handed again.
UCSD broke through at the 69:44 mark, when Andrew Keimach controlled the ball and dribbled it into the box. He then lined a shot to the left of Broncos' goalkeeper
James Iles to give the Tritons a 1-0 lead.
CPP earned several set pieces as the match progressed into the final three minutes, including a free kick closely followed by a corner kick. With Juan Meija taking both restarts, headers from
Tyler Reinhart and Enns were sent just wide of the net on both occasions.
In the 89th minute, UCSD tacked on its second score of the day. Taylor Wirth sent a pass into the deep right corner for Kasra Sarabakhsh, who made it past his defender on the baseline and sent a shot past the approaching Iles.
CPP ended the contest with a slight advantage in shots, 21-20, and the two keepers involved totaled two saves apiece.
Up next, the Broncos will return home to host Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday at 12:30 p.m. The Otters are 0-7-2 overall and 0-6-2 in CCAA play.
