LA JOLLA, Calif. - Faced with a 2-0 deficit at halftime against UC San Diego, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team never backed down. The Broncos rallied for two second-half scores to send Sunday's match into overtime. The Tritons escaped as winners though, registering a goal in the 100th minute to reach the 3-2 final.
CPP falls to 5-3-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. UCSD improves to 6-2-2 overall and 4-2-2 through league play.
The Tritons took a 1-0 lead less than six minutes into Sunday's contest, after a short cross deflected through the box and Sarah McTigue flicked in the rebound chance. Annette Ilg stretched UCSD's advantage to 2-0 in the 26th minute when she sent a long header over the Broncos' goalkeeper
Sarah Rohman.
The CPP defense held the Tritons without a corner kick in the first half and the offense outshot UCSD 7-3. Nonetheless, UCSD took its 2-0 lead into intermission.
The Broncos certainly found some rhythm in the second period though, as junior forward
Valerie Strawn put CPP on the board in the 63rd minute when she dribbled up the left side and hooked a long shot inside the far post. It marked Strawn's third goal of 2010 and the eighth of her career.
Roughly 12 minutes later, the Broncos tallied the equalizing score.
Miya Quinn sent a cross from the left corner that ended up caroming toward the net. Junior forward
Jennifer Rivera controlled it and sent a quick shot past UCSD goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong. Rivera, a transfer from Mt. San Antonio College, now has four goals this season.
With the match locked at 2-2, the CPP attack put together its final chance of regulation at the 88:26 mark. Freshman midfielder
Nushin Tasbihchi fired a shot from the top right of the box but the ball sailed to the right of the frame.
The contest pushed into overtime and the Tritons came up with the game-winner at the 99:39 mark. A UCSD corner kick sailed to the far post and after Rohman got a hand on an initial shot, the Tritons' Ellen Wilson sent a rebound chance into the net.
The Broncos finished with a 16-14 shot advantage over UCSD. Rohman and Armstrong ended up collecting two saves apiece.
Up next, CPP will host Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday at 3 p.m. The Otters hold an overall record of 2-8, while going 1-7 in CCAA action.
