POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision at home Saturday afternoon to Sonoma State in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.
The Broncos drop to 8-10 in CCAA play and 10-13 overall, while the Seawolves improve to 13-8 overall and 10-7 through league action. With the win, SSU retains possession of fifth place in the conference standings.
Despite respectable sideout percentages of 54, 51 and 54 through the three games, CPP's attack struggled mightily as the Broncos hit at .043 and .071 in the first two frames. CPP kept the game scores close though, falling 22-25, 20-25, 20-25. Diana Lake led CPP in kills with nine, while Sinead Palmer hit a team-high .353 with eight kills. On the visitor side, Allyson Seather and Keala Peterson collected 13 kills apiece.
In the first game, the Broncos jumped out to a commanding 10-3 lead with kills coming from a variety of players in that span - Jessica Doerner, Kristin McNeese, Lake and Palmer. Attack errors from CPP helped SSU creep back into it though. The Seawolves tied the Broncos at 17-17 with a kill from Peterson and after the two squads changed leads two more times, SSU finished the game off with a Sather kill.
CPP once again took an advantage in the second game, going up 15-11, but the Seawolves charged back for a 5-0 run late in the frame as Lindsay Lytle served for SSU. That stretch included a Peterson kill and then four-straight attack errors from the Broncos.
Although Lake and Palmer combined for six kills on 13 attempts in game three, SSU built on its momentum from the first two games and continued to stifle the CPP attack. In the end, the Seawolves combined for 16 block assists while the Broncos recorded eight.
Up next, CPP will travel to play Chico State on Friday at 7 p.m. That match will be followed with another road contest Saturday with Cal State Stanislaus.
