LOS ANGELES - The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team secured a 1-0 road win over Cal State L.A. Sunday in the regular season finale. Paired with the Broncos' 2-0 victory against the Golden Eagles in Pomona on Sept. 24, this marks the first year since 1999 that CPP knocked off CSULA twice in one season.
The Broncos stand at 8-7-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play and 10-7-1 overall, while the Golden Eagles hold marks of 8-7-1 in league play and 9-7-1 overall. CPP's CCAA record matches that of the 2009 season.
On Sunday, Broncos' junior midfielder
Juan Mejia struck for the match's only score in the 21st minute. After teammate
Tyler Reinhart took an initial shot, Mejia gathered the rebound and rattled a shot past CSULA keeper Thaddeus Caraway. The score was No. 3 of the season from Mejia. Reinhart's assist moved him into a tie for fourth in the all-time CPP record books at 15 with Scott McGuire.
The Golden Eagles ended up outshooting the Broncos, 18-13, but the CPP defense held tough and kept the hosts scoreless. Sophomore netminder
James Iles recorded five saves en route to his second-career shutout.
Also active in the attack Sunday was
Luis Gonzalez, who finished with four shots. Mejia and Reinhart both ended the afternoon with three attempts each.
The match proved to be a clean one, as neither team picked up a caution and a total of 18 fouls were committed. The majority of the chances came in the first half, with the squads combining for 21 shots in the first 45 minutes as opposed to 10 in the remaining time.
CSULA was able to earn a corner kick at the 88:12 mark but the Golden Eagles failed to find the equalizing score.
