Box Score

POMONA, Calif. –
The Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball team took the first two games against UC San Diego on Friday but the Broncos ended up dropping the final three, falling to the Tritons 3-2 in a dramatic match at Darlene May Gym.

The set scores ended 25-22, 25-22, 15-25, 19-25 and 11-15. The teams sustained long rallies and played tough defense, leaving the Broncos and Tritons with attack percentages of .141 and .187 respectively. Jessica Doerner led the CPP attack with 13 kills while Katie Condon put down 15 to pace UCSD.

The Broncos fall to 10-16 overall and 8-13 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Tritons improve to 18-7 overall and 15-6 in league play, with the win moving them into sole possession of second place in the conference standings.

CPP freshman setter Katie Colin collected a game-high 40 assists and Lindsey Poulos hit at a team-high .292 clip with nine kills. Poulos' seven block assists marked a season high, while Doerner set a new career mark for block assists with six.

In the opening game, Poulos, Doerner and Kristin McNeese registered four kills each. The second frame proved to be a stiffer test for CPP, as it featured 14 tie scores and six lead changes. The Broncos prevailed though, helped late by back-to-back block assist results from Doerner and Poulos. In that second game, the Broncos limited UCSD to an attack percentage of .000.

Out of the intermission between games two and three, the Tritons found a rhythm. UCSD pulled out to an 18-9 lead and kept its distance enough to capture the win. The Tritons' Roxanne Brunsting picked up kills in two of the final three points of that game.

The Broncos rebounded in the fourth game early, taking a 14-8 lead. UCSD ended the frame on a 17-5 run though, as the Tritons were helped by blocks from Audrey Green and Cara Simonsen.

The fifth and final game proved to be a seesaw affair, with both squads clamoring for points. CPP took a 9-5 lead after Doerner followed a kill with two service aces. Strong attacking from the UCSD squad put the visitors over the top though, as the Tritons escaped with a 15-11 margin in the deciding frame.

The Broncos will return to action Saturday when they host Cal State East Bay. CPP will honor Kellie Hall before the match as part of Senior Night.
