POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team cruised to an 80-55 victory over Dominican Sunday in the Broncos' 2010-11 home opener. La'kenya Simon West led the CPP offense, as she tallied a career-high 22 points to go along with six rebounds and three steals.

The 25-point margin is the largest spread of victory for CPP since Nov. 25, 2006, a 91-48 win against Chaminade. The Broncos improve to 1-1 overall, while the visiting Penguins fall to 0-2. Kelsey Janusch paced DU with 15 points, including 3-for-4 from beyond the arc.

“Anytime you force 29 turnovers like we did today, you have to be pleased with the team's effort,” CPP head coach Danelle Bishop said. “We kept the energy up the entire game and all of our players contributed.”

All nine of the Bronco players that saw action on Sunday ended up scoring, with Simon West, Reyana Colson and Megan Ford finishing in double figures.

Colson and Ford concluded action with similar lines, at 16 points each. Colson tacked on five rebounds, six assists and five steals. Ford added six rebounds, three blocks and a five steals. In both her block and steal totals, Ford set new career highs.

To start Sunday's game, the Broncos jumped out to a 5-0 lead capped off with a layup from Jennifer Bryant after Rosslyn Beard forced a DU turnover. The Penguins rallied back to grab a 14-10 advantage, the visitors' largest lead of the game, when Mary Kate Jankowski connected on a jump shot.

CPP bounced back with a 13-0 run, which featured six points from Colson. The Broncos would push their lead to as many as 15 in the first half and at the end of the period, CPP led 40-26.

Both teams ended the half with shooting percentages of 36.4 percent but the Broncos built up their lead by limiting their own turnovers and forcing the Penguins to cough up the ball. DU turned it over 14 times in the opening period and 15 times in the final 20 minutes.

To start the second half, the Penguins cut the lead to 11 with a three-pointer from Janusch. After that, CPP embarked on another run, this time a 13-0 sprint. In that span, Simon West knocked down two three pointers and two free throws.

The Broncos kept the pressure on until the final whistle and the hosts pushed their advantage as high as 29 with 2:44 to play. In the end, the 80 points for CPP marked the program's highest amount since Jan. 16, 2009 on the road at Humboldt State.

Overall, the Broncos totaled 26 points in the paint as compared to the Penguins' four. CPP also tallied 30 points off the DU turnovers.

After a quick two games to start the new campaign, CPP will now receive a well-deserved rest before starting up conference play Dec. 3 with a road contest against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
