CHICO, Calif. –
The Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball team jumped out to a 1-0 lead Friday on the road at Acker Gym but ended up dropping the next three games to suffer a 3-1 decision against Chico State.

The Broncos fall to 10-14 overall and 8-11 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Wildcats pull to closer to CPP in the standings at 7-12 in CCAA play and 10-14 overall. Set scores Friday went 25-23, 21-25, 18-25 and 23-25.

Seven service errors for the Broncos helped CSUC tally sideout percentages of 59, 66 and 54 in the final three games. Three CPP players collected double-digit kills in the losing effort: Jessica Doerner (12), Kristin McNeese (11) and Diana Lake (10).

The Wildcats' attack centered around Alex Shurtz, as she attempted 47 of the team's 143 attacks on the night. Shurtz picked up 21 kills while firing at a .277 percentage.

The first game proved to be the most competitive Friday, as the frame featured 14 points with the score tied and five lead changes. The Broncos pulled ahead for good at 22-21 with a kill from McNeese and the same result from McNeese gave CPP the clinching point of the game.

CSUC pushed out to a 6-1 lead in the second game but the Broncos bounced back to force a 12-12 tie. The Wildcats pulled ahead again and Shurtz took advantage of late opportunities, registering three kills in the final seven points.

To start the third game, CSUC's Jacqueline Johnson picked up two service aces. The Wildcats would go on to record five aces in that frame and collected a dominating 25-18 victory.

Although CSUC took a 4-0 lead out of the gates in game four, the Broncos fought back to take a 20-17 lead on a kill from Sinead Palmer. Once again though, Shurtz put down critical kills in the final stretch and the Wildcats picked up the clinching 25-23 win.

In trying to shutdown the CSUC offense, Taylr Kreutziger put together a strong performance with two solo blocks and six block assists.

Up next, the Broncos will travel to play Cal State Stanislaus Saturday at 7 p.m. The Warriors are also 8-11 in CCAA play.
