TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss Saturday night on the road at Cal State Stanislaus. Although the match marked a sweep for the Warriors and CPP's third-straight loss, the Broncos kept the set scores close throughout Saturday's contest, 24-26, 21-25 and 24-26.
CPP drops to 8-12 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and 10-15 overall, while CSUS improves to 12-13 overall and 9-11 through league play.
The Warriors jumped out to an 8-3 lead in Saturday's first game but the Broncos used a 5-0 run to tie the score at 15-15. Diana Lake recorded two kills in that span and the sophomore from Covina, Calif., ended up with 10 kills on the night while hitting at .429.
After trading sideouts late, Warriors' Eva Chafeh put down the clinching attack of the game.
CPP once again dug itself a hole in game two but battled back to make it a 21-19 deficit. A late spurt from the Warriors ended with a Liane Vicchio kill to secure the game for CSUS.
The Broncos got in a rhythm during the third game and a 5-0 run helped put CPP ahead 9-5. Lake started that stretch with two service aces. To continue the seesaw nature of the game, the Warriors ended up taking a 24-21 lead only to see the Broncos stand tough in the midst of match points and force a 24-24 tie. A service error by CPP and a Vicchio kill ended the Broncos' chances of extending the contest.
The Warriors collected 11 service aces on the evening , while gathering nine team blocks. CPP tallied three services aces Saturday, with all of them coming from Lake. Kristin McNeese led the Broncos in kills Saturday with 15, while CSUS's Vicchio and Chafeh registered 15 and 14 respectively.
CPP will return home to host UC San Diego on Friday at 7 p.m.
