POMONA, Calif. – Following a tough opening weekend to start conference play, the 16th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team rebounded with a 102-45 rout of American Sports University on Saturday night.
The 57-point margin of victory stands as the largest in 17 years, dating back to a 123-36 win over California Christian on Nov. 19, 1993. As a team, CPP shot a combined 41-for-56 Saturday, and the respective 73.2 shooting percentage sets a new program record.
The Broncos even their 2010-11 record at 2-2, with Kevin Menner pacing the CPP offense by scoring a career-high 26 points. He shot 12-for-15 from the field and added seven rebounds. Menner's 12 field goals is the highest amount for a Bronco since Dion Cook knocked down 13 against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Feb. 24, 2007.
Five other Bronco players scored in double figures, including Dwayne Fells (13), Donnelle Booker (12), Tobias Jahn (11), Mitchel Anderson (11) and Terrence Drisdom (10).
CPP jumped out to a 9-2 lead to open the game Saturday. After Randell Blackman sunk a jumper for the visiting Eagles, the Broncos raced to an astounding 27-0 run while holding ASU to zero points for more than 11-straight minutes.
Booker, who entered Saturday's contest shooting just 34.6 percent from the field, contributed a 5-for-6 performance against the Eagles. Nine of his 12 points came in the first half, helping CPP to its ridiculous 11-minute run.
For Drisdom, Saturday's game marked the first double-digit point performance of his young career as a Bronco. The freshman from Corona, Calif., went 4-for-5 on the night and knocked down two treys.
During the middle of the second half, the Broncos reeled off nine-straight successful shots at one point, a run that was capped off with two buckets from Matt Rosser. Rosser ended the night with a career-high five steals.
Mark Rutledge matched his season total with three treys on Saturday and Connor Gacek recorded his first career points for CPP by hitting a three-pointer late in the first half to push the Broncos' lead to 30.
Two players on the ASU roster ended Saturday with double-digit point totals: Blackman finished with 17 while Damien Fleming contributed 13. The Eagles fall to 2-10 on the season with Saturday's loss.
Although it didn't matter with a 57-point margin, CPP continued to struggle at the free throw line. The Broncos shot 47.8 percent, lowering their season mark to 58.2.
Up next, CPP will travel to Phoenix, Ariz., for a two-day tournament hosted by Grand Canyon. The Broncos will challenge Montana State Billings on Friday and then they'll take on Simon Fraser Saturday. CPP resumes conference play with home games against San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay on Dec. 29 and Dec. 30.
