LOS ANGELES – Behind strong offensive performances from
Reyana Colson and
Megan Ford, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team topped Western Oregon Friday, 79-61, to collect its fourth-straight victory.
The game is part of the joint California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Classic, hosted at Cal State L.A. Friday and Saturday.
The two squads played even through the first 12 minutes of action Friday but the Broncos pulled ahead by as many as eight points later in the opening half and built onto that wave of momentum in the second period.
“It took us a long time to get going,” Broncos' interim head coach Danelle Bishop said. “We're going to have start faster in the future or else it could be a long season. In terms of the positives though, I thought Reyana and Megan did a good job of being patient and finding their teammates when the other team decided to double on them.”
Colson finished with 30 points on 9-for-16 shooting, helping CPP improve its record to 4-1 overall. It marks the second-straight game that Colson has reached the 30-point mark, after pouring in a career-high 34 against CSULA on Dec. 4 in the same venue – the Eagles Nest. The senior from Compton, Calif., entered the week as the fifth-best scorer at the Division II level.
The WOU team, playing out of the GNAC, now holds a 4-5 mark in the 2010-11 campaign. The Broncos' defense did a solid job of containing the Wolves' leading scorer, Sara Zahler. Despite entering Friday with an average of 14.8 points per game, Zahler ended with just nine points.
As a complimentary scoring force to Colson, Ford finished with 17 points in Friday's win to match her season high. The junior from Newhall, Calif., also tacked on seven rebounds.
The Broncos held a seven-point advantage at halftime, 32-25, with CPP going just 10-for-28 from the field during the first 20 minutes. CPP turned it on in the second period though, especially Colson, who collected 22 of her 30 points in the final frame.
On defense, the Broncos forced 25 WOU turnovers. CPP excelled in the category of offensive rebounds, with Rachel Porter and Rosslyn Beard grabbing three apiece. Porter finished with a career-high eight points to go along with three steals.
La'kenya Simon West, despite going missing all five of her three-point attempts, still finished with 10 points and added three assists.
CPP will return to action on Saturday with a 12 p.m. tipoff against Northwest Nazarene. The Crusaders stand at 5-3 overall and play CSULA at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
