POMONA, Calif. – Behind a strong second-half performance, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team picked up a 66-47 home victory Wednesday over San Francisco State.
Reyana Colson paced the Broncos with 26 points on 8-for-16 shooting, including a 9-for-13 showing from the free throw line. She also added 11 rebounds to register her second double-double performance of the year and 18th of her career.
La'kenya Simon West contributed 17 points and connected on three three-pointers on Wednesday afternoon.
CPP stretches its winning streak to six games, improving to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. SFSU falls to 1-7 overall and 1-3 in conference action.
The Broncos' offense started slow, with the visiting Gators pulling out to a 10-2 lead early on. Colson's ability to get to the line, with her knocking down seven first-half free throws, helped CPP crawl back into striking distance. CPP ended up taking a 33-27 advantage into the intermission, despite being outshot 45 percent to 37 percent.
Turning the page to the second period, the Broncos turned up the heat and rolled out to a 13-2 run to start the half. That stretch was capped off with a three-pointer from #J.J. Judge#, after she received a nice pass from Sarah Semenero.
Colson found her rhythm from the field, shooting 4-for-9 in the final 20 minutes, while Simon West and Megan Ford contributed to the team's stellar night at the line - 17-for-21 - as each went 4-for-4 from the strike.
CPP also took charge on the offensive glass, collecting 16 rebounds on that end as compared to just six for SFSU.
In the final two minutes of regulation, Colson closed out the contest by scoring the last eight points for the Broncos. The senior from Compton, Calif., raised her season scoring average to 23.1 with Wednesday's performance.
Thursday's conference doubleheader in Kellogg Gym between CPP and Cal State Monterey Bay will feature a 3 p.m. tipoff for the women's contest.
The Otters improved to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the CCAA with a 61-44 win at Cal State San Bernardino on Wednesday.
