ARCATA – The records continue to mount for the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team.
This time, a record-tying shooting effort paid off with a 67-58 victory Thursday night over host Humboldt State in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
The win allowed CPP to share second place in the CCAA with Humboldt State and both clubs are one game behind league-leading Cal State San Bernardino.
The Broncos fired 66.7 percent from the floor on 26-of-39 shooting to tie a school-record as four Broncos scored in double figures. Senior
Austin Swift scored a team-high 19 points, junior
Tobias Jahn and sophomore
Dwayne Fells each scored 11 and freshman
Mitchel Anderson pumped in 10 for the Broncos (15-5 overall, 13-4 CCAA), who have now won eight straight games, six straight on the road and fortified their hopes for a second-straight conference crown.
That the Broncos defeated the Lumberjacks on their home court is no small task. HSU (16-6, 13-4), entered play with a conference-best eight-game winning streak and fought back from a 14-point deficit late in the second half, only to have CPP get the upper-hand and hold off the hard-charging Lumberjacks.
CPP hit 10 of its first 13 shots in the second half and built a 14-point lead on Fells' layup with 8:40 remaining and CPP up, 53-39.
Before a crowd of 1,252 at Lumberjack Arena, the host Jacks got going when Zac Tiedeman hit two straight 3-point plays – the first on a 3-pointer and the second on an and-one situation and HSU trailed by eight, 53-45 with 6:17 left.
A pair of free throws from Kevin Atkins and a layup and free throw from Brian Morris continued the run over the next 1:06 and CPP clung to its 53-50 lead with 4:54 left.
After Swift and Booker each missed the front end of a one-and-one, Tiedeman tied the game for the first time since halftime when he scored a layup, was fouled by
Dahir Nasser and hit the free throw with 3:53 left.
And that's when CPP got its act going again. Anderson responded on CPP's next possession when he scored a layup, drew the foul on Kevin Atkins, and hit the three-point play to forge the Broncos up by three with 3:43 remaining.
Then, Nasser stole the ball on the inbounds, fed the ball to Fells, who scored on a layup and CPP earned the momentum once again with a 58-53 lead.
After Swift added a free throw, HSU's Elliott Babcock-Krenk hit a 3-pointer to pull HSU to within three – 59-56 with 1:31 left.
Swift pushed CPP to a five-point lead with a jumper and the Broncos' Matthew Rosser scored a pair of free throws, added a dunk and Swift hit two more free throws in the victory.
CPP's field goal percentage tied the school-record set during last year's NCAA West Regional semifinal game against Seattle Pacific. The Broncos shot 30-of-45 from the floor in an 80-72 victory over the Falcons in Bellingham, Wash.
It's been a record-setting 10 days for CPP, which earlier established five consecutive road wins in as many games and held Cal State Stanislaus to just 32 points Saturday night. But this game may have topped both of those highlights. It's the second time in three years that CPP had won in Arcata as it swept the Lumberjacks for the first time in the series' history.
One other statistic bears note Thursday: the Broncos outrebounded HSU 26-13 and held the Jacks to just three offensive boards.
Morris scored a game-high 20 points and Tiedeman had 13 for the Lumberjacks.
CPP takes Friday off and will complete the weekend trip with Saturday night's game at Sonoma State.
Bronco notes: The game was CPP's third straight above the 50-percent FG mark and places its record at 93-9 when the Broncos surpass that level during coach
Greg Kamansky's 10 years… Jahn's 11 points are his most since scoring 10 against the Lumberjacks in Pomona earlier this season… It marked the 33rd time that Swift scored in double figures in his two-year career. The Broncos are 25-8 in those games… HSU's last loss was its 58-55 loss to CPP on Jan. 9... The Jacks' three offensive rebounds, 10 defensive rebounds and 13 total rebounds were season-lows against CPP.
