POMONA
-- A fielder's choice in the 10th inning went Cal Poly Pomona's way as the Broncos fought back from a four-run deficit to win 6-5 over nonconference foe St. Martin's in the series opener at Scolinos Field on Friday.

CPP stretched its winning streak to four as the two teams continue their series with a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at 11:00 a.m. The opener will be nine innings, and the second game will be seven innings.

With one out and men at second and first, Marcus Makia hit a ground ball that appeared to be a sure double play. St. Martin's shortstop Cody Brooks forced out CPP's Tyson Edwards with a putout to second baseman Bobby Twedt Jr.

But Twedt rushed the throw to first and the ball got past 1B Michael McIvor. Pinch-runner Jordan Hinshaw, who was at second, raced around the bases and scored the game-winner on the fielder's choice.

Trailing 4-0 through three innings, CPP scored a run in the fourth and two in the sixth. Edwards' infield ground out scored Nick Tanos, who singled to center.

In the sixth, Jenzen Torres hit his second HR of the season -- a two-run shot to left -- and CPP pulled within a run of the visiting Saints (0-4).

Saint Martin's padded its lead in the seventh on a solo home run by Aaron Johnson off Broncos reliever Jordan Whitman

The Broncos, who trailed 5-3, scored twice on three hits in the seventh. Travis Taijeron's RBI-single on an 0-2 pitch scored Makia, who reached base on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning. The bases remained loaded and Erik Riedel earned a black-and-blue RBI when he was hit by a pitch thrown by the Saints' Kaleb Wilson.

Torres and Taijeron each had two hits for Cal Poly Pomona, now 4-2 overall.

Travis Jones was 4-for-4 on the day for SMU and Josh Grenier and Johnson each had three hits.

Reliever Keith Powers earned the win with one inning of relief. He gave up two hits and walked one to improve his record to 2-0.

Wilson (0-1) took the loss.
