POMONA -- Senior Jordan Alcantar made the most of his pinch-hit appearance in Saturday's opener against St. Martin's, delivering a three-run walk-off HR over the left-field wall in a 12-11 victory over the visiting Saints in the teams' doubleheader at Scolinos Field.
The Saints responded in the second game, earning a 4-3 victory, their first this season in six games. CPP is 5-3 after the split.
The teams complete the weekend series with a 9-inning final Sunday with first pitch set for 11 a.m.
Game 1: Broncos 12, St. Martin's 11
Leading 9-7 after seven innings, CPP saw its two-run lead evaporate when the Saints answer with a four-run eighth inning.
The Saints' loaded the bases and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Luke Abbott. One batter later, Blaine Evans delivered the big blow with a two-out, three-run double off Bronco reliever Joshua Krist.
CPP went down in order in the eighth, but the Saints failed to get Josh Grenier in from third after leading off with a walk.
That would prove costly.
Jenzen Torres led off the ninth with a walk. Pinch-runner Manny Navarro was forced out on the next play when pinch-hitter Richard McDowell followed with a fielder's choice.
Marcus Makia followed with a single and Bronco coach Mike Ashman sent in Alcantar to pinch-hit for Michael Neff.
Alcantar worked the count to 1-1 on Saints reliever Casey Mitchell. On the next pitch, Alcantar blasted a fastball down the middle and the ball sailed over the left-field wall.
It marked Alcantar's first hit of the season and first HR of his four-year career.
Reliever Casey Yokubaitis (1-0) earned the victory with one inning of relief.
Nick Tanos, Tyson Edwards, Makia and Neff each had two hits for CPP, which won its fourth straight game. Makia hammered a three-run HR in the second.
SMU's Aaron Johnson and Evans each had three RBI, while Cody Brooks went 3-for-4 and Evans was 3-for-5.
Game 2: SMU 4, Broncos 3
Aaron Johnson homered twice, once to left field and the other to right, as the Saints capitalized on starter Michael McIvor's effectiveness with a seven-inning complete game.
Johnson homered in the first off Broncos freshman RHP Erick Ruvalcaba, but the Broncos answered right back in their half of the inning when Travis Taijeron and Erik Riedel began the game with consecutive doubles.
The Saints added two runs in the third on Jones' two-run single to left center that scored Andrew Elke and Matt Marcoe.
The Broncos scored with one in the third on Riedel's ground out to second that scored Navarro.
Johnson scored the eventual game-winner when he delivered a solo shot off Ruvalcaba, this time in front of the right-field scoreboard.
CPP scored once in the seventh to draw within a run. Navarro laced a two-out, run-scoring single to right that scored Stephen Gonzalez. But any rally in the second game ended when Taijeron flew out to right field with a man on first.
McIver struck out three and scattered eight hits. He threw 110 pitches, 81 strikes.
Ruvalcaba took the loss. He struck out three, walked one and gave up six hits. All four runs were earned in the 87-pitch outing.
Gonzalez and Navarro each had two hits.
