POMONA -- Senior
Erik Riedel gave Cal Poly Pomona all the cushion it needed Sunday, going 3-for-5 with four RBI and two extra-base hits as the Broncos took the final game of their series against nonconference foe St. Martin's, 9-1, before a crowd of 150 at Scolinos Field.
The Broncos took the series, 3 games to 1, and improved to 6-3 overall heading into Friday's CCAA opener against visiting Cal State Monterey Bay. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
The game was a pitchers' battle featuring Broncos sophomore RHP
Geoff Broussard and Saints' RHP Casey Mitchell. Broussard gave up the only Saints' run in his seven innings of work and left the game after throwing 104 pitches.
His counterpart was equally effective. Mitchell, who took the hard-luck loss in Saturday's 12-11 game won on a walk-off, pinch-hit, 3-run HR by
Jordan Alcantar, shut down CPP. Mitchell gave up two runs in the first and second inning, before settling down and shutting out CPP over the next four innings.
The Broncos broke open the tight 2-1 game in the seventh. With one out,
Manny Navarro reached base on a walk and
Travis Taijeron followed with a single to right. That set-up Riedel, who promptly doubled to center on an 0-1 count from Mitchell and the Broncos led 3-1.
Riedel tried to stretch the double, but was thrown out at third.
Alcantar followed and reached on a walk and
Jenzen Torres reached base on an error.
Marcus Makia followed with a two-run double to left and CPP expanded its lead to 5-1.
The Broncos tacked on their fifth run of the inning when
Richard McDowell singled, and Makia scored after St. Martin's committed two errors on the play.
Riedel added a two-run triple in the eighth to provide the final tally for CPP.
McDowell had a pair of hits including a solo home run to left, and Taijeron also had two hits that included a double.
Broussard (1-0) struck out four, walked two and allowed five hits of the Saints' six hits.
St. Martin's, now 1-6, was led by Josh Grenier's three hits.
