Box Score: Broncos 65, Sonoma State 63
ROHNERT PARK – Head Coach
Greg Kamansky wouldn't propose that his Cal Poly Pomona Broncos should play every game on the road. However, the last seven times the Broncos have played away from Kellogg Gym they've earned a victory.
The Broncos pushed their overall winning streak to nine and road streak to seven with 65-63 victory over Sonoma State in CCAA play Saturday night. CPP improved to 16-5 overall and are tied with Humboldt State and CSU San Bernardino for the top spot in the league at 14-4 with two weeks remaining in the regular season.
Behind
Donnelle Booker and
Mitchel Anderson, who scored 13 points each, CPP fired better than 50 percent from the field for the fourth straight game. The Broncos were 29-of-55 from the field (52.7 percent) and hit nearly 57 percent in the final 20 minutes to earn their first road sweep against Humboldt State and the Seawolves.
Sophomore
Dwayne Fells scored 12 and senior
Dahir Nasser 10 in the victory.
The Broncos trailed by 11 in the first half (26-15) with 6:47 remaining before getting back on-track. They closed the half on a 13-4 run, capped by Booker's dunk with 35 seconds left, and trailed 30-28 at the half.
Anderson fired a 3-pointer with 3:33 remaining in the game that pushed CPP out front, 61-59. The game featured two more ties down the stretch, until the Temecula freshman came back again.
He broke free down low and scored on a layup and the Broncos led, 65-63 with 1:14 left.
SSU turned the ball over twice down the stretch without a field goal attempt, and fired an errant 3-pointer at the buzzer.
CPP returns to the court Friday night at Cal State L.A. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
